Masturbating: the truth VS myths
Since the beginning of mankind on our planet, every little fact that people failed to understand or whose origins they couldn’t understand was surrounded by a lot of myths and rumors. It’s pretty clear that people who do not understand something will not stop speculating on its purpose and talking about it. The more mysterious it is, the more people like to give their opinions, which will take the form of myths. Naturally, SEX has not been spared the great curiosity of uneducated people.
Like every other sexual practice, masturbation has been the favorite target of many myths which have survived even in an age where we should know better. It’s very surprising to see that even some people who recognize masturbation and accept it as an inevitable part of the development of any human being claim that this practice is only for teens. This can’t be more wrong. Masturbation is practiced by a lot of people of all ages and for very different reasons. Women and men who have been married for years still masturbate when they feel the need for it.
Another well-known myth is the idea that masturbation is only performed when you are single, desperate people who can’t find a partner or by perverted individuals. Not true at all! More than 90% of all males and at least half of the women masturbate. About 98% of all people questioned by studies admitted to having masturbated at least once in their lives. Masturbation is an absolutely natural thing and people shouldn’t be ashamed to admit to it. Reality tackles the idea that masturbation is a practice only suited for losers of the big “Find a lover” contest.
Some people think only men masturbate. This is also a myth! Women like sex just as much as men, they have no moral or physical reasons to avoid masturbation. While it is true that women who are engaged in long term relationships tend to masturbate less often, most of them just do it on occasion.
The myth that women don’t masturbate is next door to “only a homosexual masturbates”. This is absolutely absurd. Because almost every boy and a lot of girls discover sexuality through masturbation between the ages of 10 and 13, this would mean that almost everyone is homosexual.
Another stupid idea designed to worry young people is the myth that masturbating can cause the penis to stop growing. There’s absolutely no relation between the penis size and masturbating. Millions of men can testify to this… No, masturbating doesn’t shrink the testicles either. This is another “brilliant” idea some people spread around. Who comes up with these bright ideas anyway?
Then there are the strange varieties of myths according to which masturbation can bring physical changes to a body. We all know that these myths are typically used to scare youngsters, but people have really believed in them and some still do. For example, some people believe that masturbating can cause hair to grow on someone’s hand. This story is designed to scare people and enforce abstinence.
It’s of no use to point out that there hasn’t been a single case of strange hair growth on someone’s hand caused by masturbation. And yes, there are more such fantastic claims. Masturbation is said to even cause hair loss, bad eyesight, nervous illness and fatigue. Who would have thought?
A brighter idea: Regular masturbation can make men run out of semen. There is no such thing as running out of semen. Even at an age of 90 the testicles of a man can still produce semen and viable spermatozoids. It is however true that at such an age men are no longer able to use their semen, but the point is that the semen is still being produced despite of a long lifetime of intercourse and masturbation. Have you ever heard that some people claim that masturbation can cause sexually transmitted diseases? This one is very extraordinary, how can you give yourself a disease?
